i drew all of these tools with a fine nib cartridge pen because i liked the clean but subtly varied lines it creates

when i turned up the greys in levels on this drawing the colour of the paper behind it went exactly the colour i was going to paint it anyway, so i kept this and worked over it with similar colours

as such

line drawing, this time the paper was lighter

the shading layer, using a textured brush and the lines on multiply
